Lonely Planet API
Posted in: Blog/News by admin on 25 June 2008 | No Comments
Big news in my view in the tourist area: Lonely Planet, one of the biggest brand in traditionnal tourist guide, just launched an API to access to his content.
The API is REST/XML based, quite easy to understand. So congrat to Chris (yes, one of the numerous former ex-In-Fusio guys in this area!)
A nice mobile web site, m.lonelyplanet.com is available, but it’s a wap only site. Here are a few snapshot of this app:

(from lonelyplanet developer blog).
And expect soon an integration with 8Motions!

Navx launch his own platform
Posted in: Blog/News by admin on 6 March 2008 | No Comments
Navx, a french company selling customized voices and POI for GPS, seems to go also in the UGC content. They just announced yesterday the opening in public beta of their platform.
This seems very similar to what 8Motions is doing, except that they are focused on the GPS market. While GPS is a big market, I stilll doubt that GPS users will be big UGC contributors: the primary goal of a GPS is to help you to navigate but it will be far from being a perfect device to create UGC.
Our objective is to bring the ability to create user generated content related to geolocalisation with a clear focus on mobile, which is in our view the most interesting device for this. Export is possible for plenty of format, including GPS to consume some user generated content.
Anyway, good luck for NavX, and we will see how the platform will evolve!

Mashup are hitting PND

Dash corporation, who plans (since a long time) to launch a connected PND will bring mashup capacities to this PND: the ability to display user generated content on their PND…Seems not to far to the Mapz concept that I’ve introduced yesterday!

J2memap still got Google Map support!
Posted in: Blog/News by admin on 2 August 2007 | 4 Comments
MGMaps, another provider of free mobile mapping software has been forced to remove the GoogleMap support of his software.
Sad news. For j2memap, I’ve been trying to contact GoogleMap and the Microsft several times, to get an agreement with them to use more “legally” their map. Only Microsoft answered, but the offering was at that point (beginning of this year) not really mature. Google never answered despite several letter to different people….
Note that if you use the “proxy mode”, the Google statellite tiles might not appear because their proxy is blocking a single platform (mine) to do too many request per day (too many does not seems to be very big, something like 1000 requests)….
