The mobile app use map data from Mappy, a french provider. This can be loaded on java mobile with a GPS, as a Nokia N95, or without GPS, as a Sony-Ericsson W910. In this case positioning is given by cell Id, through an access to the cell data base of the operator.
All this features have been developed thanks the Mobile Map Toolkit. Graphics have been integrated thanks to LWUIT library.
The same features can be find on the web with Google map as map data provider. User can enhance their content previously cough with their mobile or generate new content and share it with web or mobile users.

8Motions on the N95
Posted in: Apps, MMT/J2memap by admin on 19 December 2007 | No Comments
8Motions just run perfectly well on my latest N95 8Gb. The screen orientation is supported, as well as taking picture and uploading them to the flickr directly.

TIP: put the software in the internal memory, not the 7GB one. This one is extremely slow, and will slow done applications like 8Motions which use local storage for caching.
TIP2: if you want to upload directly to flickr, remember to put ask a flickr token on the mobile. It will be asked the first time that you try to do it, so you need to be close to your computer and type the required URL. I know that this could be better, and we will improve this later on.
Also thanks to nokia 95 user blog for linking the app…
Velib mobile mapz
Posted in: Apps by admin on 4 September 2007 | 2 Comments
This post will be both in French and English, as it’s “Paris Centric”

To demonstrate the capacities of the “Mapz” engine, a small extension has been created this week end. It allows you to see the nearest Velib station. Velib is a smart system put in place in Paris (and some other cities) where you can reat a bike for some hour in a “station”. You can then give back the bike to another “station”. The issue, for Parisian, is to find the nearest station, and to know if there is a free bike available at the station.
Thanks to Velib map, they are now able to do this!

Some snapshot of one of the new effect to be introduced in the new client version: a cool “iTune” like effect. Will not be available on all browsers, but look quite cool….Hope to have a screen cast soon.

MyCityMate: another app using J2memap library
Posted in: Apps by admin on 5 March 2007 | No Comments
It has been out since a few weeks, but did not blog about it, but MyCityMate is another nice application with J2memap library embeeded in it.
The basic idea of mycitymate is pretty simple. You add the places you know and like or write reviews about places you’ve been. You do this for the city you know best, your home city, let’s say London or Berlin. Others do it for Barcelona, Madrid or New York for example. The more people participate – the better the guide!
Of course, there’s also quite a bit more to it, such as the possibility to share reviews exclusively with your friends, get individual recommendations from mycitymate, and download all this stuff to your mobile or iPod. Perhaps it’s best if you discover it yourself!

A post that is pending since a long time (sorry Mikhail!):
A Mikhail Novikov, the russian developer behind Jotle, the great mashup between GoogleMaps, Placeopedia, GeoNames, YouTube and Flickr made a mobile version of Jotle, using J2MEmap!
This mobile version provides access to Placeopedia and GeoNames from mobile, as well as a link to Wikipedia from the same application!
Congratulation, and good work!
(the link to the app will be posted soon)
